If you appreciate a good drop of vino, there are plenty of wineries around Melbourne for you to enjoy during your stay. Whether you want to stay relatively close to the city or don’t mind venturing further afoot, we have vineyards and cellar doors in abundance. Some of our best wine regions are as follows – we’re sure that you will find something to tickle your fancy!
This is probably our most famous region and, at around an hours drive from the CBD, is perfect for a day trip. There are over 70 wineries to choose from, scattered from picturesque Marysville to rustic Hurstbridge. The Yarra Valley is also home to some of the more famous brands, including Domaine Chandon, Rochford, De Bortoli and Yering Station.
Pristine beaches are not the only thing that the Peninsula is famous for – it is also home to over 50 boutique cellar doors. Around an hours drive from the CBD, the region is best known for its pinor noir but also produces delicious chardonnay. Why not check out the popular Foxeys Hangout, Montalto, Tuck’s Ridge and Box Stallion wineries?
On the opposite side of Port Phillip Bay you will find a wine region that was known as Victoria’s largest during the 1800s. These days, the cool climate and rich soils offer varieties (such as chardonnay and shiraz) with a subtle European style. Some of the more popular wineries include Yeowarra Hill, Leura Park Estate, Shadowfax Wines and Terindah Estate.
Considered the closest wine region to Melbourne at only 40 minutes drive, the cool and dry climate produces some truly elegant varieties (notably shiraz). When visiting Witchmount Estate, Bacchus Hill Winery or the Galli Estate Winery, chances are you’ll meet one of the local winemakers and be given the opportunity to learn how it’s all done.
This region, at around an hours drive from the CBD, is known for producing some of Australia’s beset sparkling wine as well as excellent chardonnay, pinor noir and shiraz. Most of the wineries (including Passing Clouds, Birthday Villa and Hanging Rock Winery) are quite small-scale and family-owned, ensuring that you receive personal service.
The next time you’re in the Melbourne area, we definitely recommend that you check out one of the stunning local wine regions. They are all within close proximity, ensuring that you can get in a couple of tastings and a delicious lunch all within a single day trip. Whilst the Yarra Valley is certainly the most famous region, they all offer beautiful scenery and tasty vino.
