Adelaide might be considered the wine capital of Australia, but this doesnít mean that the wine regions close by to cheap accommodation in Sydney arenít worth the visit. In fact, you will find some of the countryís oldest grape plantings if you travel to the famous Hunter Valley. As there are a number of wine regions around New South Wales, weíve pinpointed those closest to Sydney:
It might be a 3 hour drive away, but the Hunter Valley is a must-visit if youíre looking for a day trip. Itís home to some of the oldest and best-known wine producers in the country, including: Wyndham Estate, De Bortoli Wines Pokolbin, Tulloch Wines and Rothvale Vineyard. Some of these producers have been around for 180 years.
At just under 4 hours away from Sydney, the Orange wine region is the perfect daytrip, especially as itís home to a number of food and wine festivals throughout the year. It is known for its chardonnays, shiraz, Riesling and merlot. Some of the regions top wineries include: Angullong, De Salis, Phillip Shaw and Ross Hill.
This region is around an hour and a halfís drive away and is fairly young in the scheme of things (the first vines were planted in 1983). Even so, the region is home to more than 60 vineyards specialising in pinor noir and pinot gris. Some of the top wineries include: Centennial Vineyards, Eling Forest, Tertini Wines, Cuttaway Hill and Artemis.
The high altitudes that this region experiences, coupled with the long summers and autumns, ensures that conditions are perfect for some intense-flavoured wines. Wines from 12 local producers can be sampled at the Hilltops Regional Cellar Door. The region is also known as the cherry capital of Australia and has its own distillery.
At a little over 2 hours drive, this wine region boasts a number of wineries that offer some truly picturesque views. The unspoiled natural beauty of the area can be experienced at some the regionís leading wineries, including: Cambewarra Estate, Coolangatta Estate, Cuppittís and Two Figs. All of the wineries have their own cellar doors.
