Motel Accommodation in Bendigo

Located close to the geographical centre of Victoria (about 90 minutes drive from Melbourne) is the city of Bendigo. Its name came from the Bendigo River, which is just one of a number of waterways in the region.

The region is a popular tourist destination, particularly amongst heritage and cultural enthusiasts. Families, school groups and business people are also known to travel throughout the area quite extensively.

The city is renowned for the discovery of gold during the 1850s, which brought an influx of migrants to the area. Around 25 million ounces of gold have been extracted from the mines, making it the highest producing Australian goldfield in the 19th century. Many buildings from the gold rush era still remain, as do some of the mines (such as the Central Deborah Gold Mine).

Tourists can also expect quite a rich events culture – the National Swap Meet, Groovin’ the Moo, the Bendigo Blues and Roots Festival, the Easter Festival and Festival of Light are some of the more popular events held throughout the year. Be warned that you will need to book cheap accommodation in Bendigo early should you wish to travel during these peak times!
