Culinary delights, sparkling waters and endless summer sun – life in abundance is life on The Murray. Explore the winding waterways of Australia’s longest river as you wander through red gum forests, splash around on sandy river beaches, and savour the famous food, wine and fresh produce. Cruise downstream on an historic paddle steamer and see the past come to life at open-air museums and Indigenous cultural sites. Play captain on your own houseboat and then tee off at some of the best golf courses in the country. Travel out to the Murray Sunset National Park to see the famous Pink Lakes for yourself. Located in the far northwest corner of Victoria, the lakes are a popular attraction for photographers, with their unusual colouring changing throughout the day, from a deep pink to a bright white. The lakes’ waters are actually crystal clear and the beds of the four lakes are made up of solid salt. However, it is the red algae (Dunaliella salina), which grows in the water that gives the lakes their pink hue.Choose from a number of walking trails around the lakes, including the Lake Becking Nature Walk, the Kline Nature Walk and the Lake Hardy Nature Walk. Keep an eye out for local kangaroos, wallabies, emus and echidnas as you wander. Bird watchers will love the opportunities on offer, with red-rumped parrots, mallee ringnecks, spotted pardalotes and white-fronted chats, all calling the region home.
