In this historic goldmining town, try your luck panning for gold, explore a famous open-cut gold mine and discover a giant fish from the age of the dinosaurs. Big Fish Fossil Hut is easily located just off the Newell Highway. It holds a collection that includes a wide range of specimens depicting a range of ancient wildlife groups that have lived across Eastern Australia over the past 700 million years and include groups of invertebrates through to fish, amphibians and dinosaurs. There is something for everyone who has an interest in prehistoric wildlife – from the earliest jellyfish, to even the skull of a ‘tiny’ ancestor of t-Rex.
Gold was discovered in the district in 1889, with the Peak Hill gold mine operating between 1893 and 1917, and 1996 and 2002. On the Peak Hill Open Cut Experience enjoy free self-guided walking trails, a bridge over a section of old mine workings, viewing platforms over five open cuts and spectacular vistas from the hilltops. The mine ceased production and closed in 2002 however a tour of the mine reveals original gold working dating back to 1890s, several walking trails, and viewing areas to the open cut mining areas.
