Brisbane has become known as one of Australia’s most pleasant cities to visit – dissected by the lovely Brisbane river, there’s easy access to the beautiful coast and visitors will experience some of the best year round weather in the country. It may not have the same fame as Melbourne and Sydney, but Brisbane is slowly changing this with its balance of attractions, activities and atmosphere.
Whether you’re planning a short trip or a longer stay, here are Brisbane’s top 5 attractions that you cannot miss:
1. Whale Watching
With the open ocean so accessible, we definitely recommend heading to Redcliffe between June and November to see the Humpback and Southern Right whales. The calm waters off Moreton Bay are a favourite place for these gentle giants to rest and tend to their young.
2. Riverlife Adventure Centre
If you’re a bit of an adrenalin junkie, Riverlife is the perfect destination for you. Try your hand at abseiling, rock climbing and kayaking or join a tour that highlights the region’s Aboriginal culture (the Mirrabooka Aboriginal show/experience is highly interactive).
3. Lone Pine Koala Sanctuary
Those who love our cuddly wildlife should head to the sanctuary, known for being Australia’s original ‘home of the koalas’. Queensland is the only state in Australia that allows you to cuddle a koala, so you’ll be able to do just this with the 130 koalas housed at the sanctuary.
4. Cultural Centre
Visit the entertainment rich cultural district, which runs adjacent to Brisbane’s South Bank waterfront area. It encompasses the Queensland Art Gallery, Queensland Gallery of Modern Art, Queensland Museum, State Library and the Queensland Performing Arts Centre.
5. River Cruise
The iconic Brisbane River is a focal point for many of the city’s amazing activities and attractions. Although there are a number of ways to cruise the waters, we definitely recommend doing so on an old-style paddlewheel vessel. A dinner or lunchtime cruise is ideal!
When you participate in the activities or visit the attractions outlined above, we’re sure that you’ll see just why Brisbane is favoured by locals and tourists alike. There are plenty of ways to spend your time, whether you prefer the great outdoors, shopping or an adrenalin rush. By carefully choosing your accommodation, we’re sure that you’ll have a stay to remember.
