Staying at the Motel

When staying at the Ouyen Motel, we hope that you will also take the time to explore the surrounding area – Manangatang, Piangil, Nandaly, Woomelang, Hopetoun, Walpeup, Underbool, Mildura and Robinvale.

Ouyen might seem like a small country town, but the area actually has a number of attractions and fun activities on offer. We’ve outlined some of the more popular ones here for your convenience.

Located at the heart of the vast national park system in the Mallee region, there are plenty of natural attractions to discover. Head to the Murray Sunset National Park, Hattah-Kulkyne National Park, Murray-Kulkyne National Park or the Wyperfield National Park. All of which are filled with wildlife, walking trails and other natural sites. The Tati-Tati Nature Reserve is home to a salt lake surrounded by natural Mallee vegetation.

If you want to immerse yourself in the region’s history, there are a few attractions that we highly recommend. Check out the Big Mallee Root, which is the largest Mallee stump in Australia. Located on the Calder Highway, it serves as a tribute to the early settlers who cleared the land of drought-resistant eucalypt trees. We also recommend the Local History Research Centre, Victoria Hotel. It’s also known for being the former home of the Great Vanilla Slice Triumph.

A number of events are held in the region each year – we highly recommend checking them out if you happen to be in town. Popular events include: the Autumn Art Show (March or April), Farmers Festival (November) and the Mallee Wildflower Festival (September). The wildflower festival, in particular, is quite popular as the area around Ouyen is home to more than 100 species of drought-resistant wildflowers – a must for such an arid climate.

If you enjoy sporting activities, there isn’t a whole lot on offer in Ouyen, but you can play a game of bowls, lawn tennis or golf. All of these pursuits are a great way to meet locals and strike up a conversation or two. The golf club boasts an 18-hole course and is open from mid-April until the end of August each year. The clubhouse also has full bar facilities. For something a little different, visit Mallee Farm Horse Rides for trail rides, cart rides and children’s rides.

Walpeup Lake

At only half an hours drive, Walpeup Lake is a hot spot for tourists and locals when the weather is warm. Located in the Timberoo Flora and Reserve, it is popular for swimming and canoeing. There are also picnic areas and walking trails through the reserve to be enjoyed. The road to the lake is fairly well signposted, but is accessed via a 6km gravel road. Nearby Walpeup is also worth a visit – the Schubert Nature Walk is always fun.

Day Trips

The central location of Ouyen makes it the perfect base for exploring much of the surrounding area on day trips. The bustling hub of Mildura is only an hours drive north, Swan Hill is an hour and half drive east, Hopetoun is an hour and a half drive south, and the border between Victoria and South Australia is an hour and a half drive west. Besides Mildura and Swanhill, there are also a number of Murray River towns within easy driving distance.
