12 Apostles

Located only 10 minutes drive from the Port Campbell township, the 12 Apostles would have to be one of Australia’s most famous natural wonders. The sight was created by constant erosion of the limestone cliffs; once the resulting caves and arches collapsed, rock stacks up to 45 metres high were all that remained. The best time to view the 12 Apostles is at sunrise and sunset, when they go from being dark and foreboding to a brilliant sandy yellow.

National Parks

Those who love the great outdoors will be able to explore the Port Campbell National Park to their hearts content. Within the park, discover impressive arches, rock stacks, islands blowholes, London’s Bridge and the picturesque Grotto. Other nearby parks include the Bay of Islands Coastal Park (which stretches from Peterborough towards Warrnambool), Loch Ard Gorge and Gibson’s Steps (located just before the 12 Apostles).

Water Sports

If you love getting out on the water,   has much to offer. Fishing is a popular pastime – why not try your hand at beach fishing or book yourself onto a deep sea fishing charter? – as is swimming, surfing, snorkeling and deep sea diving. A number of tour companies operate in the area, so it is easy to find a guide if you require a little assistance. Please note that the beaches around the town do tend to be a little rough, as they are right on the ocean.

Food & Wine

The region is also known for its delicious local produce and wine. There are a number of wineries in the area that you can visit during your stay. Many of them offer tastings, have cellar doors where you can pick up a bottle or have a café/restaurant for you to enjoy. There are only a handful of bars, cafes and restaurants in the main town area, but they are all delicious and worth a visit. You also must try some of the local seafood, caught fresh!

In the surrounding area…

Whale Watching

In nearby Warrnambool, you are able to see Southern Right Whales frolicking with their calves from late May to early October. The whales have chosen this as the ideal location to give birth and raise their calves. This is a popular time to visit the region, and boat charters onto Lady Bay (so that you can get up close and personal) are available. If you would prefer to see the gentle giants from the shore, there are Whale Viewing Platforms at Logan’s Beach.

The Warrnambool region is also known for its vibrant festivals and events scene, which is definitely worth a look in if you have the time. Some of the more popular events include the Australian Whale Boat Racing Championships, Day on the Hill (held each Easter Sunday), Fun4Kids Festival, Grand Annual Sprintcar Classic, and the Warrnambool Show. A number of farmers and crafts markets are also held in the region on most weekends, so check them out.
