One of the biggest natural attractions of the region is easily crocodiles – you will be able to view the freshwater variety in the natural habit whilst in Katherine.

Art & Culture

To get a real insight into Aboriginal culture, we recommend taking a tour of one of Katherine’s local communities. Here you will learn basket weaving, spear throwing, fire lighting and how to play the didgeridoo (among other things). We also recommend viewing work by local artists, which can be found at the Stockyard Gallery, Top Didj Cultural Experience & Art Gallery, Godinymayin Yijard Rivers Arts & Culture Centre, and Merrepen Arts Centre.


Those who are interested in the history of the region will not be disappointed with a range of heritage attractions to choose from. These include: Borroloola Police Station Museum, Katherine Museum, Larrimah Museum, National Trust Museum (at Pine Creek), O’Keeffe Residence, and the Timber Creek Police Station & Museum. Much of Katherine’s history is tied up in the railway – the town even had to move moved twice during the line’s construction!

Family Friendly

If you are travelling with the kids, there are plenty of activities to entertain and amuse (mum and dad will get a kick out of them, too!). Watch the barramundi being hand-fed at Territory Manor; take a dip in the Katherine Hot Springs, Mataranka Thermal Pools or Tjuwwaliyn/Douglas Hot Springs; and dine under the stars at Marksie’s Stockman’s Camp Tucker Night. There are also plenty of trails and indigenous experiences that are suitable for children.

There are plenty of outdoor activities for visitors to enjoy, from those that get the adrenalin pumping to those that are more sedate. There are plenty of nearby rivers that are good for fishing (including the Daly and Victoria Rivers), you could take a scenic flight over the town and surrounds, take a boat or paddle steamer cruise down the Katherine River, try your hand at canoeing and kayaking, and a number of other adventure activities.
