Staying at the Motel

If you have chosen to stay at the motel, we definitely recommend checking out towns in the surrounding area, including: Warnertown, Weeroona Island, Napperby, Gladstone, Crystal Brook and Port Germein.

If you have chosen to stay at the Travelway Motel, you might be pleased to learn that there are plenty of things to see and do in the local area. Whether you’re an indoor or an outdoor person, there is sure to be an attraction for you.

You cannot travel to Port Pirie without visiting the beach, particularly if you’re travelling during the warm summer months. Solomontown Beach is the place to be when the weather is warm. There are stunning lawn and paved areas (dotted with shady trees) if you don’t feel like venturing onto the sand. There is also a shaded playground and undercover barbeque area to be enjoyed. The beach is host to many events throughout the year, such as an Australia Day breakfast.

Those who enjoy the great outdoors without the sand will also find plenty to do in and around Port Pirie. There are a number of beautiful parks and gardens just waiting to be discovered, from Memorial Park (which is host to a number of events each year) to Lions Park (which overlooks the Pirie River). If you would like to try your hand at bushwalking or want to get out of the town, we recommend the tracks at Napperby or Telowie Gorges.

As a town with a rather extensive history, those who are more interested in heritage activities will find plenty to see and do. Take a tour of the Nyrstar Port Pirie Smelter (which is the largest primary lead smelter in the world), see the Shakka Exhibit (where you can get up close and personal with the largest white pointer shark landed in South Australia), or visit the National Trust and RSL Military Museums for even more information on the area.

Art & Culture

If you are more interested in the art and culture celebrated by the area, your first stop should be the Regional Tourism & Arts Centre (where the helpful staff are also happy to point you in the direction of any other attractions). The Regional Art Gallery showcases inspiring exhibits from all over Australia, as well as the talents of many local artists. The Northern Festival Centre is also worth a visit to see the latest blockbuster film or catch a live performance.

Family Friendly

When traveling with the kids in tow, finding activities that will keep them entertained is very important. Fortunately, there is plenty to do when staying in Port Pirie. The Express Miniature Railway features two miniature engines and only operates twice per month (extra sessions during school holidays), whilst the Model Railway showcases a variety of model trains. The Flinders View Park & Playground is also a great place to spend an afternoon.

If you are the kind of person who likes to get the adrenalin pumping, you will probably be interested in the adventure activities that Port Pirie offers. Checkout 4Shore Sk8 (the local skate park), the Aerodrome (which used to be a wartime base but is today used by accomplished pilots and a flying school) and Paintball Skirmish (sessions are run twice daily). If you want to get out the town, there are plenty of places to go four wheel driving in the Southern Flinders Ranges.
