Melbourne is known for its obsession with sports and staying at the motel puts you in an ideal position to experience as many of them as possible. In the nearby area, you will find the Deer Park Bowls Club, Sunshine Golf Club, Deer Park Sports Complex, Moore Park Women’s Sports Centre, Tenpin Bowling, MCG, Flemington Racecourse, Rod Laver Arena and Etihad Stadium. If planning to attend a big game, it’s a good idea to purchase tickets in advance.

Food & Wine

There can be no denying that Melbournians love their food. Head out to the Yarra Valley or Mornington Peninsula if you’re looking for a day trip; this is where some of the state’s best wineries can be found. There are also plenty of delicious restaurants in the CBD, from the authenticity of Chinatown to the Mediterranean treats found on Lygon Street. The Footscray Markets and Queen Vic Market is also worth a visit if you want to pick up some fresh produce.

If you’ve got the kids in tow, the city is home to a number of attractions that the whole family will enjoy. Some of these include: Scienceworks (which also houses a Planetarium), Melbourne Zoo, Werribee Zoo (which has more of an open range design), Melbourne Aquarium and Melbourne Zoo. There are also plenty of parks, shopping centres, cinemas and beaches in the area that kids of all ages will enjoy exploring – they’ll never run out of things to do!

Day Trips

The great thing about Melbourne is that, if you’ve had enough of the city or just want to explore further afield, there are plenty of surrounding areas that are just perfect for a day trip. Ballarat, home to the famous Sovereign Hill, is only an hour’s drive away. Geelong, and the start of the Great Ocean Road, is a similar distance. The gorgeous Dandenong Ranges are an hour and a half’s drive away, whilst the Mornington Peninsula is about an hour and forty minutes.

Those who are more interested in the history of Melbourne and our country as a whole won’t be disappointed. Some of the sites that we recommend visiting include: Abbotsford Convent, Altona Homestead, Cooks Cottage, Old Melbourne Gaol (they also run ghost tours of an evening!), Parliament of Victoria, Polly Woodside, Rippon Lea Estate, Seaworks (which details our maritime history), Vietnam Veterans Commemorative Walk, and Werribee Mansion.

Often called the cultural capital of Australia, it should come as no surprise that Melbourne is home to a number of massive events every year. Some of the more popular ones include: the Australian Open (January), White Night (February), Moomba Festival (March), International Comedy Festival (April), Royal Melbourne Show (September), AFL Grand Final (September), Melbourne Cup Carnival (November), and Tropfest (December).
