Fortunately, the city is home to some of the most pristine and calm beaches in the country, so people of all ages will be able to enjoy them. As there are simply too many to choose from, we’ve narrowed it down to some of our favourites:
We thought we’d kick off the list with Melbourne’s most famous beach, which is located only 6km from the city centre. The beach itself is popular for swimming and sun baking but the area is popular all year round because of the bustling pier and delicious food vendors. Not to mention that Luna Park is right across the road.
This beach is located only a 20 minute drive from the CBD and is very popular amongst families. As a “no boating zone”, you can rest assured that the waters are very safe for swimmers. The sandy bay also offers a number of other facilities – including barbeques, picnic tables and playgrounds – so that you can make a day of it.
This beach is located only a 30 minute drive from the CBD and is famous for the 82 brightly coloured and iconic bathing boxes that dot its perimeter. This is another popular spot amongst tourists, as the area is teeming with restaurants and retail stores. It’s also a popular spot amongst photographers, as the landscape is truly picturesque.
This beach is located only a 20 minute drive from the CBD and is probably best known for the commercial precinct that borders it. The unique location of this beach has made it ideal for deep-water swimmers as well as those who like to paddle in the shallows. Try to time your visit with one of the monthly markets held close by.
If you don't mind travelling a little further afield, this beach is located around 90 minutes drive from the CBD. The coastline here is truly picturesque and is dotted with jetties, walking tracks and a number of rock pools. Whether you’re interested in swimming, sun baking, snorkeling or boating, this is the ideal spot.
